Alligator Gar Fry
Atractosteus spatula (fry)

Newly hatched alligator gar fry live in warm, shallow backwaters and flooded vegetation where current is weak. They cling to plants at first with an adhesive organ on the snout, then begin feeding on tiny crustaceans, insect larvae, and fish fry. Their striped pattern helps break up their outline among stems and surface shadows. A notable early trait is their ability to use air at the surface as oxygen-poor nursery water warms up.
