Hoverfly
Helophilus pendulus
The adult is a flower-visiting fly often seen hovering over vegetation, ditches, and garden blooms. It drinks nectar and pollen, making it a useful pollinator while the larvae develop in wet, decaying habitats. Its yellow-and-black markings resemble a wasp, but it cannot sting. Precise hovering and sudden darting flight are among its most noticeable behaviours.
