Mojave Desert Tortoise
Gopherus agassizii

An adult Mojave Desert Tortoise inhabits arid desert valleys, alluvial fans, and rocky bajadas where it digs deep burrows for shelter. It is mostly herbivorous, grazing on grasses, wildflowers, leaves, and cactus pads during cooler parts of the year. Adults rely on a heavy domed shell, strong limbs, and patient retreat rather than speed when threatened. A notable adaptation is the ability to store water in the bladder, helping it survive long dry periods.
