Common Ringed Plover
Charadrius hiaticula

A small shorebird of sandy beaches, shingle banks, mudflats, river edges, and Arctic or temperate open ground. It feeds by running, stopping, and pecking up worms, insects, mollusks, and small crustaceans. Adults nest in shallow scrapes on bare ground and rely on camouflage, alarm calls, and distraction displays to protect eggs and chicks. Its bold black-and-white head pattern and single dark breast ring make it one of the most recognizable small plovers.
