Marbled Salamander
Ambystoma opacum

A stout, secretive salamander of eastern North American forests, usually found under logs, leaf litter, or in small animal burrows near seasonal wetlands. It hunts at night for worms, slugs, insects, and other soft-bodied invertebrates. The bold pale bands on its dark body break up its outline on the forest floor. Unlike many salamanders, it breeds in autumn, with females guarding eggs in dry pond basins until flooding triggers hatching.
