Hairy Woodpecker
Leuconotopicus villosus

An adult Hairy Woodpecker lives in mature forests, wooded suburbs, orchards, and open woodlands across much of North America. It climbs trunks and branches with zygodactyl feet and a stiff tail, chiseling into bark for beetle larvae, ants, caterpillars, and other insects, with some fruit, seeds, and sap added seasonally. It defends space and communicates by sharp calls and rapid drumming on resonant wood. Its long, sturdy bill helps distinguish it from the smaller Downy Woodpecker.
