Cerisy's Sphinx Moth
Smerinthus cerisyi

The adult moth flies in riparian woods, forest edges, and shrubby areas where its larval host plants grow nearby. It is mostly active at dusk and night, resting by day with mottled forewings that resemble bark or dead leaves. Adults in this group have reduced feeding ability and rely largely on energy stored from the caterpillar stage. A sudden flash of rosy hindwings can startle predators as the moth launches into rapid flight.
