Black-back Cicada
Neotibicen tibicen
The adult black-back cicada lives on tree trunks and branches in eastern North American woodlands, parks, and yards. It drinks xylem sap with a piercing beak and relies on flight to move between calling and feeding sites. Males produce loud, ringing songs with abdominal sound organs to attract mates. After years underground as a nymph, the winged adult stage lasts only a short breeding season.
