Regal Horned Lizard
Phrynosoma solare
The adult regal horned lizard inhabits arid deserts and semi-desert grasslands of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, often using sandy washes and open scrub with ant trails. It specializes in eating harvester ants, picking them off with quick tongue strikes while staying remarkably still between movements. When threatened, it flattens against the ground, inflates its body, presents its crown of horns, and may squirt foul-tasting blood from the eyes at persistent predators. Its regal-looking head spines are among the most prominent in the horned lizard group.
