Brine Shrimp
Artemia salina

A tiny crustacean of hypersaline lakes, salt pans, and brine pools where few fish predators can survive. It swims with rhythmic, leaflike limbs and often moves upside down while filtering algae, bacteria, and fine organic particles from the water. Its thin exoskeleton and quick, jerky swimming help it endure a harsh open-water life. A notable survival trick is the production of drought-resistant cysts that can remain dormant for years before hatching when conditions improve.
