Black Phoebe
Sayornis nigricans

The adult Black Phoebe is a black-and-white flycatcher commonly seen around water, rocky banks, bridges, and buildings across much of western North America. It hunts by perching low, then darting out to catch flying insects before returning to the same lookout. Its diet is mostly flies, beetles, wasps, and other small arthropods taken in quick aerial sallies. A notable fact is that it often builds a mud-and-plant-fiber nest under ledges, bridges, or eaves, and it habitually pumps its tail while perched.
