Rock Bass
Ambloplites rupestris

Adult rock bass live in clear lakes, ponds, and slow to moderate streams with rocky bottoms and abundant cover. They are ambush-oriented predators, eating crayfish, aquatic insects, and small fish with a wide, quick snap of the jaws. Males fan out shallow nests and guard eggs and fry aggressively during the breeding season. Their red eyes and dark blotched sides are distinctive field marks among North American sunfishes.
