Northern Mole Cricket
Neocurtilla hexadactyla

The adult Northern Mole Cricket is a stout, brown, subterranean cricket found in moist soils near wetlands, fields, gardens, and stream margins. It digs extensive tunnels with broad forelegs and eats roots, decaying plant material, and small soil animals. Adults are mostly active at night and may come to the surface after rain. Males produce loud chirping calls from specially shaped burrow openings that amplify the sound.
