Longnose Gar
Lepisosteus osseus

Adult longnose gar inhabit slow rivers, oxbows, reservoirs, and lakes, often cruising near the surface or holding among submerged vegetation. They are ambush predators that eat mostly fish, using a long, tooth-filled snout to seize prey with a sideways snap. Their hard, diamond-shaped ganoid scales provide strong natural armor. A notable adaptation is the ability to gulp air with a vascularized swim bladder, allowing survival in warm, oxygen-poor water.
