Massasauga
Sistrurus catenatus

The massasauga is a small rattlesnake of wetlands, wet prairies, grasslands, and open woodlands in parts of North America. It hunts mostly small mammals, frogs, lizards, and other small animals by lying in cover and striking quickly when prey comes within range. When threatened, it usually relies on camouflage and retreat, but may vibrate its rattle as a warning. Its name comes from an Ojibwe word often interpreted as “great river mouth,” reflecting its association with marshy lowland habitats.
