Midas cichlid
Amphilophus citrinellus

Adult Midas cichlids inhabit freshwater lakes and rocky or sandy margins in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, often defending caves, crevices, or dug nesting pits. They are aggressive omnivores, eating insects, snails, smaller fish, crustaceans, algae, and plant material. Breeding pairs guard eggs and fry with persistent charges, bites, and body displays. Many adults show either barred gray-brown colors or bright gold-orange coloration, and large males may develop a pronounced nuchal hump on the head.
