Brown Water Scorpion
Ranatra fusca

Brown water scorpions live in still or slow freshwater such as ponds, marsh edges, and weedy ditches, where their thin brown bodies resemble dead stems. They are ambush predators, seizing small aquatic insects, tadpoles, and other tiny animals with raptorial forelegs before piercing them with a sharp beak. The long tail-like tube is not a stinger; it is a breathing siphon that lets the insect take air from the surface while remaining submerged.
