Hoverfly
Myathropa florea
The adult hoverfly is common around woodland edges, hedgerows, parks, and gardens where flowers provide nectar and pollen. It hovers with precise control, then darts quickly between blossoms and sunny resting spots. Its black-and-yellow pattern mimics a wasp, but it has no sting and is harmless to people. A distinctive dark marking on the thorax has earned this species the nickname “Batman hoverfly.”
