Common Wood-Nymph
Cercyonis pegala

The adult Common Wood-Nymph is a brown, eyespotted butterfly of grasslands, woodland borders, roadsides, and other sunny openings with tall grasses. Adults fly low and unevenly through vegetation, visiting flowers for nectar and sometimes taking moisture or nutrients from damp ground. Its larvae depend on grasses, so adults are often found near suitable grassy host plants. The large eyespots on the forewings can startle or misdirect predators, especially when the butterfly opens its wings suddenly.
