Lesser Horseshoe Bat
Rhinolophus hipposideros

The adult Lesser Horseshoe Bat roosts in caves, mines, cellars, and quiet buildings, wrapping its wings around its body while resting. At night it flies low through woodland edges, hedgerows, and pastures, catching small moths, midges, and other flying insects. It navigates and hunts with high-frequency echolocation, using its distinctive horseshoe-shaped noseleaf to shape the calls. In winter it hibernates in cool, humid underground sites to conserve energy.
