Chigger Mite
Eutrombicula alfreddugesi

Chigger mites live in humid leaf litter, grassy edges, and low vegetation where they wait for passing hosts. The parasitic larva attaches to reptiles, birds, or mammals and feeds on dissolved skin tissue rather than blood, while later stages live freely in soil and prey on tiny arthropods and eggs. Their feeding saliva can produce the intensely itchy welts known as chigger bites. A larval chigger is so small that it is often felt only after the irritation begins.
