Virginia Tiger Moth Caterpillar
Spilosoma virginica (caterpillar)

This fuzzy caterpillar is common in fields, gardens, roadsides, and weedy edges across much of eastern North America. It feeds on a wide variety of low plants, chewing leaves rather than hunting other animals. When disturbed, it may curl up or press its dense hairs against a threat. Its color varies from pale yellow to rusty orange or whitish, which is why it is often called a yellow woolly bear.
