Emperor Dragonfly
Anax imperator
Patrols sunny ponds, lakes, and slow waterways, often flying back and forth over open water and nearby reeds. It hunts on the wing, catching flies, midges, bees, and other small insects with its legs before eating them in flight or from a perch. Males are strongly territorial and chase rival dragonflies from favored stretches of water. One notable fact is that this large dragonfly can fly powerfully for long periods, making it one of the most impressive aerial hunters among European insects.
