Spotted hoplo
Megalechis thoracata

The adult spotted hoplo is a bottom-dwelling catfish of slow, warm freshwater habitats such as ponds, marshes, ditches, and quiet streams. It eats insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, plant matter, and organic debris while probing mud and leaf litter with its barbels. Rows of hard bony plates along the body make it unusually tough for a small catfish. During breeding, males build and guard floating bubble nests among surface plants.
