Eastern Pondhawk
Erythemis simplicicollis

Adult eastern pondhawks patrol sunny ponds, lakeshores, marshes, and wet meadows, often perching low on bare ground or vegetation before making short hunting flights. They catch mosquitoes, flies, small moths, and other insects in the air, using quick turns and spiny legs to secure prey. Males commonly develop a powdery blue abdomen as they mature, while females and young males are bright green. This species is an especially bold hunter and will take prey nearly its own size when the chance appears.
