Oval-based Prominent Larva
Peridea basitriens (larva)

A small caterpillar found on the leaves of deciduous trees, especially oaks, where it feeds by chewing soft leaf tissue. It moves slowly along twigs and leaf edges, relying on stillness and plant-matching colors to avoid birds and other predators. When disturbed, it may rear up or cling tightly rather than flee. Like many prominent moth larvae, this stage stores most of the energy needed for the later winged adult.
