Alaska Yellowjacket
Vespula alascensis

This stage represents the familiar free-flying yellowjacket encountered around northern woods, meadows, cabins, and food sources. It searches quickly for nectar, fruit sugars, carrion, and insects, and it may cut up prey to carry protein back toward the nest. When handled or cornered, it can bite with its mandibles and use a venomous sting for defense. Its black-and-yellow warning colors advertise that small size does not make it harmless.
