African jewelfish
Rubricatochromis bimaculatus

African jewelfish is a small, vividly colored cichlid native to slow rivers, streams, floodplains, and vegetated freshwater habitats in West and Central Africa. It feeds on small invertebrates, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, and fry, using quick lunges and a sharp bite to seize prey. Pairs become strongly territorial during breeding, guarding eggs and fry and driving away intruders much larger than themselves. Its bright red and blue-spotted breeding colors make it popular in aquariums but also conspicuous in the wild.
