Rhinoceros Beetle
Megasoma typhon
The adult rhinoceros beetle is a heavy, night-active scarab found around tropical forest trees, sap flows, and decaying vegetation. It feeds on tree sap, ripe fruit, and other sugary plant fluids rather than hunting prey. Males use their horn and powerful legs to shove and lift rivals during contests for mates. Despite its bulky armored body, the adult can fly with a loud, heavy buzz.
