Slippery Dick
Halichoeres bivittatus

A juvenile slippery dick lives around shallow reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy patches in the western Atlantic and Caribbean. It darts close to cover while picking tiny crustaceans, worms, and other small invertebrates from the bottom. Young fish rely on quick turns and mottled coloring to avoid larger reef predators. Like many wrasses, this stage may later change sex as social conditions on the reef shift.
