Black and Yellow Spider Wasp
Podalonia luctuosa

This solitary spider wasp is usually found in warm, open habitats with sandy or loose soil where it can search for prey and nesting sites. Adults visit flowers for nectar, but females hunt spiders, paralyzing them with a sting and burying them as food for their larvae. Its strong legs, fast flight, and restless ground-running make it a capable hunter despite its small size. The black-and-yellow warning coloration advertises a painful venomous sting to would-be predators.
