Mediterranean Acrobat Ant
Crematogaster scutellaris

A small acrobat ant of Mediterranean woodlands, especially associated with cork oaks, dead branches, bark, and wooden cavities. Adults forage for honeydew, nectar, and small arthropods, using quick movement and strong mandibles to handle food or rivals. When threatened, the heart-shaped abdomen can be raised over the body to apply irritating chemical secretions. This raised-gaster posture is one of the most recognizable behaviours of Crematogaster ants.
