Common Whirligig Beetle
Gyrinus natator

The adult lives on the surface of ponds, lakes, canals, and slow rivers, often skating in fast circles when disturbed. It feeds on small insects and other floating animal matter, detecting movement on the water with great sensitivity. Its divided eyes can see above and below the surface at the same time, a key adaptation for avoiding predators and finding food.
