Red Wolf
Canis rufus

The red wolf is a lean canid of the southeastern United States, now surviving mainly in managed wild populations and conservation programs. It favors forests, wetlands, agricultural edges, and coastal plain habitats where cover and prey are available. Its diet is mostly rabbits, rodents, raccoons, and white-tailed deer, taken with quick chases, pounces, and powerful bites. One notable fact is that it is among the world’s most endangered wild canids, with recovery complicated by habitat loss and hybridization with coyotes.
