Giraffe Calf
Giraffa camelopardalis (calf)

Giraffe calves are born on open savannas and lightly wooded grasslands, where they can stand and walk within about an hour. They stay close to their mothers and feed on milk at first, then begin nibbling leaves as their long necks and legs develop. When threatened, a calf relies on running, hiding near cover, and kicking with surprisingly strong legs. A newborn already drops from a standing mother at birth, a fall that helps break the umbilical cord and stimulate breathing.
