Asian Elephant Calf
Elephas maximus (calf)
Asian elephant calves are born in forest, grassland, and scrub habitats where access to water and shade is important. They stay close to their mother, nursing for milk while gradually tasting grasses, leaves, fruit, and soft bark. A young calf must learn fine trunk control over many months, often tripping or fumbling before it can feed and drink skillfully.
