Cicada Killer
Sphecius speciosus
A large solitary wasp of sandy banks, lawns, and open ground where females dig burrows. Adults drink nectar, while females hunt cicadas and paralyze them with a sting as food for their young. Males patrol territories and may bluff-charge intruders, but they cannot sting. Despite its size, it is usually not aggressive toward people unless handled.
