Broad-backed Darkling Beetle
Blapstinus substriatus

The adult is a small, dark ground beetle found under stones, bark, weeds, and dry litter in fields, grasslands, and disturbed open ground. It walks mostly at night, scavenging seeds, fungi, and decaying plant matter rather than actively hunting. Its broad, hardened back and tough wing covers help it squeeze through debris and resist small predators. When threatened, it may freeze, tuck in its legs, or use an unpleasant defensive secretion.
