Eastern Marbled Emperor

Heniocha dyops

Eastern Marbled Emperor

The adult is a large nocturnal emperor moth of eastern and southern African woodlands, flying mainly at night in search of mates. It does not feed as an adult, relying on energy stored from the caterpillar stage while males use sensitive, feathery antennae to detect female pheromones. Its marbled wing pattern helps it rest unnoticed on bark and dry vegetation during the day. Like many saturniid moths, its short adult life is focused almost entirely on reproduction.
