Australian Garden Orb Weaver
Hortophora transmarina

The adult Australian Garden Orb Weaver is a common nocturnal spider of gardens, shrubs, fences, and woodland edges across much of Australia. It builds a circular sticky web at night to intercept flying insects, then rests nearby or in the web ready to rush in when prey vibrates the silk. Its diet is mostly moths, flies, beetles, and other small arthropods subdued with a venomous bite and wrapped in silk. During the day it often hides in foliage or crevices, a useful habit for avoiding birds and wasps.
