Southern House Mosquito Larva
Culex quinquefasciatus (larva)
This aquatic larva lives in still, nutrient-rich water such as ditches, barrels, ponds, and clogged drains. It hangs near the surface to breathe through a siphon and filters tiny organic particles, algae, and microbes from the water. When disturbed, it wriggles rapidly downward in a jerky motion to escape. A notable feature is that this feeding stage is entirely water-bound, unlike the flying adult.
