Asian Giant Hornet
Vespa mandarinia
A large hornet of Japanese forests, mountainsides, orchards, and village edges, often nesting underground or in cavities. Adults hunt insects with powerful mandibles and also visit tree sap and other sugary foods for energy. It is fast in flight and defends itself with a potent venomous sting, making it one of the most formidable predatory wasps in its range. A single worker can overpower large prey, while queens are among the largest hornets in the world.
