Western Diamond-backed Rattlesnake Juvenile
Crotalus atrox (juvenile)

A juvenile western diamond-backed rattlesnake ranges through desert flats, thorn scrub, and the edges of burrows while keeping close to cover. It relies on camouflage and quick defensive strikes, feeding mostly on lizards, small mice, and other small vertebrates. As it sheds, new rattle segments are added and the warning buzz becomes more effective. Juveniles are still vulnerable to hawks, roadrunners, and mammalian predators, so they hide more readily than large adults.
