Northern Flicker
Colaptes auratus

The adult Northern Flicker lives in open woodlands, forest edges, parks, and yards across much of North America. Unlike many woodpeckers, it often feeds on the ground, probing for ants and beetles with its long tongue. It flies in a bounding path and uses strong wingbeats, sharp pecks, calls, and drumming displays in territory defense. A notable fact is that its bright yellow or red wing and tail shafts flash vividly when it takes flight.
