Black-crowned Night Heron
Nycticorax nycticorax

The adult Black-crowned Night Heron is a compact wading bird of marshes, lake margins, mangroves, rice fields, and wooded waterways across much of the world. It often feeds at dusk or night, standing still at the water's edge before stabbing fish, frogs, crustaceans, insects, and small vertebrates with its strong bill. Adults fly with broad rounded wings and give a distinctive rough call, but their main hunting strength is patient waterside ambush. One notable fact is that this species commonly nests in mixed heron colonies, while still foraging alone with a quiet, deliberate style.
