Masked Lapwing
Vanellus miles

Adult Masked Lapwings live in open country across northern and eastern Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands, especially wetlands, lawns, fields, and urban parks. They forage on the ground for insects, worms, and other small invertebrates, often running a few steps before pecking. During breeding season they are famous for loud alarm calls and fearless swooping attacks against animals that approach the nest or chicks. Adults have small yellow wing spurs used in close defensive encounters, though most threats are driven away by display and dive-bombing.
