Australian Subterranean Termite
Coptotermes acinaciformis

The Australian subterranean termite is an underground, wood-feeding insect found across much of mainland Australia, especially in warm regions with access to moisture. Individuals travel through soil and mud tubes to reach timber, feeding on cellulose and returning to the protected colony network. Soldiers defend passages with strong mandibles and chemical secretions, while workers maintain tunnels and feed nestmates. This species is one of Australia’s most economically important timber pests because colonies can attack structural wood while remaining hidden.
