Chilean Flamingo

Phoenicopterus chilensis

Chilean Flamingo

The adult lives around saline lakes, lagoons, estuaries, and shallow wetlands of southern South America. It wades through open water, stirring sediment with its feet and filtering algae, small crustaceans, and other tiny prey through specialized plates in its bill. Long legs and a long neck let it feed where many birds cannot, while strong wings allow long flights between wetlands. Its rosy plumage comes from carotenoid pigments in its diet.
