Short-snouted Seahorse
Hippocampus hippocampus

The adult short-snouted seahorse lives in shallow northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean habitats such as seagrass beds, algae, lagoons, and sheltered coastal waters. It anchors itself with a prehensile tail and ambushes small crustaceans, sucking prey through its tubular snout. Its bony body rings and ability to change colour help it blend into plants and withstand minor attacks. A notable trait is male pregnancy: the male carries developing young in a brood pouch until they are released as free-swimming fry.
