Lionfish Juvenile
Pterois volitans (juvenile)

A juvenile lionfish settles around coral, rubble, mangrove roots, and seagrass beds where small prey are abundant. It hunts tiny fish and crustaceans by hovering, flaring its fins, and using sudden suction strikes. Its striped pattern breaks up its outline among reef shadows, helping it ambush prey and avoid larger predators. Venomous fin spines become an important defense as the young fish grows.
